CENLA schools earn national honors
Five
Rapides Parish schools and a number of other schools in Central Louisiana recently earned
national recognition. The U.S. Department of Education named three schools 2011 National
Blue Ribbon Schools: Rosenthal Montessori Elementary School in Alexandria, the Louisiana
School for Math, Science and the Arts in Natchitoches and Many Elementary School.

Rapides program offers financial perk for school-business partnerships
Marjorie
Taylor, of The Orchard Foundation, is leading an effort to link businesses and schools.
She indicated that there’s a wealth of opportunity in CENAL for new grads, as well as
employers. The Cenla Word Ready Network initiative led to the establishment of technical
and vocational courses in local high schools that will help students earn industry-based
certifications, and companies providing financial support to establish a course in a
school can get matching funds of up to $5,000 from The Rapides Foundation.

National Emergency Training in CENLA
Hundreds
of people are at LSUA to take part in emergency training. It's part of National Field
Deployment training hosted by the Department of Health and Hospitals. Participants from
DHH, the CDC, VA and other organizations will participate in order to help the agencies
work together more cohesively during an emergency. Full article.

The Rapides Foundation announces Video Contest
The
Rapides Foundation is looking for one team from each high school in Allen, Avoyelles,
Catahoula, Grant, LaSalle, Natchitoches, Rapides, Vernon and Winn parishes to create a
video on the importance of healthy eating and physical activity. The winning team will
work with media professionals to turn their original concept into a 30-second television
commercial aired on local TV and YouTube as part of the Foundation’s Diet and Physical
Activity Initiative. Full

CENLA: Possible snow and/or ice
Brrrrrr,
its cold outside, but the real weather trouble, if it comes, is expected tonight and
Friday morning. Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Lake Charles are
predicting an inch or two of snow accumulation in the Alexandria area Friday morning -- or
more. Local officials are preparing for the worst. Full article.
Freezing rain expected later this week
Cold
weather returned with a vengeance this week, bringing morning lows in the 20s throughout
Cenla, and sleet and freezing rain is in the forecast Thursday evening and early Friday
(Feb 3 & 4). LA Dept of Transportation & Development representatives indicated
that workers are on standby if weather conditions called for ice or snow this week.

Monster truck show comes to CENLA
Pine
Prairie resident Jeff Murphy isn't a thrill seeker, but loves taking things to new heights
-- 10 feet off the ground to be exact. Murphy will be riding high today as he displays
his custom-built monster truck "Fatal Attraction" for the first time in competition at the
Extreme Monster Trucks Nationals show at the Rapides Parish Coliseum. Full article.
Companies team up to offer rides home for Cenla residents
To
combat drunken driving, state and area law enforcement agencies are participating in the
Louisiana Highway Safety Commission's "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest."
program, one of the largest holiday DWI enforcements ever in the state. In the
Alexandria-Pineville area, if an individual has had too much to drink, Gene's Wrecker
