Alexandria development head's setbacks inspire 'Team Miracle Man'

Several runners participating in the 10K trail on Sept 24, as part of the Eddie's BBQ Race for da Ribs at Kincaid Lake in Rapides Parish will have very special motivation. The 13-person "Team Miracle Man," consisting mostly of participants from Crossfit Alexandria, will be running in honor of Bill Hess, Alexandria's economic development chief, who nearly lost his life more than six weeks ago. City's costs for Fulton Hotel dropped since hotel initiative began

Mayor Roy recently indicated that the city of Alexandria is in much better financial shape concerning the Alexander Fulton Hotel than it was before the downtown hotels initiative. Full article.

 

City officials challenge City Council leaders to provide 'original ideas"

Administration officials recently asked for guidance from the city council about Fulton hotel’s future, but Council members declined to offer assistance, with Larvadain saying the mayor "made a series of horrible decisions" and was looking to be bailed out by the council. Council member Gibson indicated that relationship problems between the administration and council are caused by the administration. Full article.

 

City shows off local parks

SPARC is changing the face of parks in the city of Alexandria. City officials and community members recently visited local parks recently constructed or renovated. At each park, the facilities were consistent: walking trails, matching pavilions and restrooms, matching light fixtures, benches, picnic tables, trashcans and fencing.   Full article.   

 

Alexandria City Council approves renewal contracts for park landscaping

The Alexandria City Council recently approved renewal contracts that call for spending nearly $140,000 to provide landscape maintenance at 11 city parks and facilities. When the contracts expire next year, city officials will seek additional bids on new contracts. Full article

 

Mayor Roy 'cautiously optimistic' about budget agreement

Mayor Roy recently indicated that he’s "cautiously optimistic" about the city's ability to forge a new budget for 2011-12. The mayor said he's "relying" and "trusting" that council members will stick by their word and pass the compromise budget, which cut the original fee increases in half and uses nearly $1 million in surplus funds that the mayor had hoped to avoid spending.   Full article.   

 

Mayor Roy offers city budget compromise

Alexandria Mayor Jacques Roy recently presented what he calls the "perfect compromise" to balance Alexandria’s 2011-12 budget. Roy spoke during the Finance Committee meeting about fee increases for the zoo, transit system, garbage pickup and stormwater management program.   Full article

 

City Budget calls for furloughs, higher insurance premiums

Mayor Roy recently indicated that a decline in projected sales tax revenues and increased unfunded state mandates created a shortfall of more than $7 million. The revised budget calls for every classified city employee is expected to take 32 hours in furlough time, or the equivalent of one day, each quarter, and employee contributions to health insurance will more than double.   Full article.

Alexandria budget discussions continue

The Alexandria City Council's Finance Committee, Mayor Roy and council members met for the fourth and final budget meeting to discuss the city's proposed budget for 2011-12. Mayor Roy also stressed the importance of maintaining the city's more than $12 million surplus, despite the 2011-12 budget requiring 32-hour furloughs for all of the city's classified employees.  Full article.
