Climate change threatens birds
Ornithologists with university research laboratories, federal agencies and environmental groups recent released a report indicating that climate change poses a threat to most U.S. bird species, including many that live and visit LA's rapidly disappearing coastline. "The State of the Birds: 2010 Report on Climate Change" says the effects of climate change over the next century will vary across the United States and the world, causing a variety of threats to bird species that could foreshadow similar threats to humans. Mansura will hold its Sesquicentennial (150th) grand celebration on Saturday, March 13 and Sunday, March 14. Saturday, March 13th marks the day 150 years ago that the town of Mansura was incorporated. Full Article.
Shreveport's Hummer plant gets temporary reprieve
Word recently arrived in Shreveport that a fleet company ordered 849 new H3s and H3Ts, giving the plant a reprieve from a scheduled shutdown. The plant will be at full production during the batch build. Workers also learned some employees would get temporary loan of one of six new GM vehicles, part of a program called the GM Vehicle Plant Tour, designed around the premise that personal, word-of-mouth testimonials are the best way to persuade consumers to try and buy new products. LA leads South in 2009 Top Corporate Investments in US Ranking
Trade & Industry Development magazine recently released rankings in its fifth annual “CiCi Awards” (Corporate Investment/Community Impact), and four of LA’s 2009 business development projects received awards. Only four other Southern states had any projects in the top 15, and each had only one vs. three for LA. Additionally, LA ranked second in the U.S. with four total awards, & second nationally in the Corporate Investment category with three total awards. La’s four awards, as well as its Corporate Investment awards, ranked best in the South. Full Article.
Early Dementia Screening Project Potential in Cenla
The Institute for Dementia Research and Prevention started in 2008 at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center to bring to LA a world-class dementia research program, focused on understanding the basis for Alzheimer’s disease. There are over 600 individuals throughout La participating in this program, which is open to any individuals in the Alexandria area who are 60 yrs of age or older and who are interested in receiving annual cognitive exams as part of this study. $3 gas possible in 2010
In its monthly short-term energy outlook report, the Energy Information Administration said that for the full year the national average should be about $2.84 per gallon, up from $2.35 per gallon in 2009. Pump prices are already above $3 in California and are almost there elsewhere on the West Coast. Full article
Tow Charges Increase by 20 percent

Christus Grace Home of Alexandria Opens March 11
Christus Grace Home of Alexandria grand opening is at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, March 11, with the Chamber of Commerce performing a ribbon-cutting. The community is invited to tour the new facility that offers a homelike environment for patients that are coping with a terminal illness. Full Article

Court sides with Alexandria on bankrupt Alexander Fulton Hotel
Alexandria got a favorable bankruptcy ruling regarding the Alexander Fulton Hotel. If the ruling survives potential appeals, it allows the city to proceed with its downtown hotels agreement with Hospitality Initiatives Partnership. Full Article.

Necessity Entrepreneurship
An unknown number of Americans who lost jobs in the Great Recession created their own. The rate of so-called "necessity entrepreneurship"—people starting businesses because other income opportunities are gone—increased sharply in the U.S. during the recession, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, a research project that tracks entrepreneurship. Necessity was a factor for 24.7% of new U.S. ventures in 2009, according to GEM surveys, up from 16.3% in 2007. Full Article.
National broadband plan has long, hard road ahead
As part of its National Broadband Plan, the gov’t wants broadcasters to relinquish excess airwaves, which wireless carriers could use to deliver mobile-Web access. Biologists: False River ‘dying,’ can revive -- drawdown proposed
Biologists from the LA Dept. of Wildlife & Fisheries recently outlined preliminary plans to draw down water levels in False River. Biologist Rachel Walley indicated that False River has been in a slow decline for decades in terms of water quality. A drawdown, which is common practice in the state, is the easiest and most cost-effective way to restore False River’s health. Full Article.
Starting Over at 55
According to the Small Business Administration, more than five million Americans age 55 or older run their own businesses or are otherwise self-employed. The number of self-employed people ages 55 to 64 is soaring, climbing 52 percent from 2000 to 2007. Full Article.
