NSU may offer PREP classes in Marksville

Northwestern State University's College of Education and Human Development is exploring the possibility of offering its Practitioner Teacher Program at the Tunica-Biloxi Cultural and Education Resource Center in Avoyelles Parish. PREP is Northwestern State's fast track for individuals with a passion for teaching to become certified in one year.  Full article

Cancer screening set for Marksville

The Cenla Medication Access Program's cancer screening van will visit Marksville on Jan. 24 and Jan. 25 to offer colorectal, breast and cervical cancers screenings. Appointments are required.  Full article

 

Marksville makes first state semifinal appearance tonight

Local residents are excited their Marksville High football team will make history when it plays at in the Class 3A state semifinals against Amite High. If the Marksville Tigers win, they advance to the Superdome and the state championship game. Full article

 

Tunica-Biloxi Tribe: Think about education

The Tunica-Biloxi Tribe recently opened its new Cultural and Educational Resources Center in Marksville. Center director Earl Barbry Jr., indicated that education was a major focus in creating the center, and Northwestern State University (NSU) will offer graduate and undergraduate classes, starting in 2012. The 40,000-square-foot museum houses Tunica Treasures artifacts on display and will host traveling Native American and European artifacts. Full article

 

Tunica-Biloxi Cultural and Educational Resources Center Opens Nov 30

The Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana will open its Cultural and Educational Resource Center on the Tunica-Biloxi Reservation on November 30. The 40,000 square foot museum, which houses the largest collection of European and Native American artifacts from the Colonial period, will have Tunica Treasures artifacts on display and will feature traveling exhibits. In addition, Northwestern State University (NSU) will also offer both undergraduate and graduate courses at the new facility beginning in 2012.  Full article.

 

Paragon will be final show of The Judds farewell tour

The Judds" are booked to play the final show of their farewell tour (billed as "The Last Encore") on Oct. 29 in Marksville at the Paragon. Meanwhile, Wynonna will play solo dates around the nation.  Full article.  

 

Marksville USDA office has new location

The Avoyelles Parish USDA Service Center recently moved from its downtown Marksville location to a new location at 629 Tunica Drive West (Highway One) in Marksville. Part-time office days for USDA Rural Development will be the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon. Full article.  

 

Hank Williams Jr. in Kinder; Rodney Carrington in Marksville

On Saturday, August 8, the Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder will present country music legend Hank Williams Jr. in The Pavilion at Coushatta. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; show starts at 8 p.m. On the same night, the Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville, will host stand-up comedian, actor and country music artist Rodney Carrington at the Mari Showroom.
