City Council considers plans for stockyard site development

Alexandria council president wants to partner with Rapides Parish on smoking ban

At the behest of the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living, Alexandria City Council officials are considering an expansion of the city's current smoking ban ordinance, which includes all restaurants and most workplaces in the city. The City Council initially was preparing to vote on the expanded smoking ordinance last month. However, Johnson said he expects there to be several more meetings on the issue before anything official occurs.  Full article.    

 

Alexandria fee increases fail

Alexandria City Council members, in a 4-3 vote, defeated proposed fee increases for next year's budget. Council members voted against increases for zoo admission, public transportation, refuse service, commercial pick-up and storm water management. Full article.  

 

Fee increases planned

In order to deal with projected budget shortfalls, the Alexandria City Council is considering five ordinances that would increase fees for the city's zoo, transit service, residential and commercial garbage service and storm water management program. Full article 

 

Alexandria council moves to protect planning funds for downtown marina

More than six years ago, the Alexandria Central Econ. Dev. District got word that nearly $500,000 in federal funding had been earmarked to study the possibility of building a marina along the Red River. Much has changed, but there is still a desire to study downtown riverfront development and find the money needed to do so. The Alexandria City Council recently passed an ordinance allowing the city to partner with ACEDD and the Greater Alexandria Econ. Dev. Authority for downtown riverfront development projects. Alexandria budget passed

The Alexandria City Council passed the fiscal year 2010-11 budget with a unanimous vote. Despite proposals to provide more funds for "quality of life" groups, the council approved the budget as submitted. The council and administration also established a Budget Review Committee to provide sales tax revenue projections to the council on potential funding for non-governmental organizations. Alexandria: Last-minute budget changes could cause layoffs

The Alexandria City Council will consider revising the proposed city budget today, but Mayor Roy warned that changes could result in layoffs. Roy and his administration presented a $182 million overall budget that reduces spending on operations by $8 million in the General Fund, down to $49.9 million compared with the current fiscal year. Alexandria council delays budget vote

After hearing from some who would be affected by the city's proposed budget cuts, the Alexandria City Council decided to put off a final decision until April 27. Among the proposed cuts are non-governmental organizations, police and fire overtime, and some public works services. Full Article.

 

Alexandria City Council Delays Selection of City Fiscal Agent

The Alexandria City Council this week refused to accept the lowest bid and the administration's recommendation for a new fiscal agency for the city. City Council President Roosevelt Johnson delayed the item so that it will come up for discussion before the council again at its next meeting on March 9. Full Article.
