Future VA Admin building renovations progressing

The Vernon Parish Police Jury recently indicated that renovations to the future home of the Veterans Administration offices are progressing. When renovations are complete, the Police Jury will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony.  Full article.  

 

Third Street Market in Leesville to be open seven days a week

Starting in March, the Third Street Market in Leesville will become more than just a Saturday attraction. It will be home to vendors seven days a week, 365 days a year. Local produce growers and shop owners will team up with civic and church organizations to provide a bevy of opportunities to get local products at reasonable prices. Full article

 

Entrepreneurship 101 classes focus on entrepreneurship

Starting on February 29, Business Acceleration System will offer Entrepreneurship 101 classes free of charge to existing entrepreneurs in Leesville, as well as individuals who want to begin a new business in Central Louisiana. Army continues its green mission to reach sustainability

Fort Polk agencies have their own programs and aim to reach their goal of sustainability. To do this, they have multiple programs in operation, including a white paper recycling program that is expected to grow and accept more than just white paper in the future.  Full article.

 

Military police train for real-life emergencies

Sixty-seven soldiers from Fort Polk's Military Police Battalion recently participated in an emergency vehicle operator's course designed to demonstrate emergency vehicle capabilities and to test driver skill in obstacle navigation/situational driving. Full article.

 

SFAC offers home-like environment for wounded soldiers

The Soldier and Family Assistance Center is a place soldiers can go that is like a comfortably appointed home. It offers a home-like setting where a soldier might read quietly; play video games, and—more importantly, relax.  Full article.  

 

Net Zero helps Fort Polk achieve sustainable future

The Army recently chose Fort Polk as a one of eighteen pilot installations for its Net Zero Waste program.  Net Zero is about reducing energy use, water use and waste production, all of which can help secure the Army's mission into the future. Army sources indicate that reducing consumption involves participation by all post agencies and residents on Fort Polk.  Full article

 

Young Writer’s Conference

The LA School for Math, Science and the Arts (LSMSA) English faculty will sponsor the fourth annual Young Writer’s Conference on Feb. 17 for students in grades seven through 12. Location: The LA School for Math, Science and the Arts (LSMSA). Sessions include writing poetry, writing fiction and writing non-fiction prose. The registration fee is $5.00.  Full article.

 

Families observe Ft. Polk soldiers training exercise

Families of soldiers and supporters of Fort Polk recently witnessed soldiers in training exercise where they tried to make peace between Afghanistan soldiers and Marghoz villagers.  The purpose of the exercise was to provide a realistic experience to allow soldiers to make mistakes there instead of Afghanistan.  Full article
