Leader selected for innovation organization

Terry Jones will be the executive director of a new "regional innovation organization" in the Baton Rouge area. Jones will seek to foster partnerships among the region's various assets, such as the business incubators and universities; improve access to capital for early-stage companies and serve as an all-around "evangelist" for entrepreneurship. Some of his first few tasks will include creating a name, brand, website and newsletter for the organization.   Full article.  

 

Industry Clusters Can Add Jobs, Bolster Entrepreneurship, and Spark Innovation

States need to cultivate their industry clusters as a low-cost way to stimulate innovation, new-firm start-ups, and job creation. Clusters also give governors a way to articulate a vision of economic prosperity, engage stakeholders in driving recovery, boost export intensity, and bring focus and discipline to investments and policies. The Kauffman Foundation has a new podcast, Infectious Talk, hosted by Paul Kedrosky that goes beyond the surface to get to the heart of current issues. Each episode of Infectious Talk features an in-depth conversation with prominent thinkers about growth, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Full Information.  

 

Entrepreneurship Goes Global

Anyone who doubts the worldwide spread of entrepreneurship should have headed to Monaco for the World Entrepreneur of the Year awards ceremony. Ernst & Young reported that two-thirds of the entrepreneurs reported they were seeking new opportunities while only 20% of the older companies were doing so. “The entrepreneurs are the only ones adding jobs.” Full Article

The Kauffman Foundation is working to further understand the phenomenon of entrepreneurship, to advance entrepreneurship education and training efforts, to promote entrepreneurship-friendly policies, and to better facilitate the commercialization of new technologies by entrepreneurs and others.  Kauffman Foundation CEO and President Carl Schramm recently told university graduates: "We need an army of the smartest, most passionate young people to try their hand at building a business–people who will take their heads and their hearts into the market, founding companies that will bring forth new products and services that will help humankind." A List to Aspire to...

As Louisiana's declining revenue fortunes force budget cuts, reorganization, and refocusing, here's a significant opportunity. Of all the "best of" lists that are published every year, this one could make all the difference for Central Louisiana: U.S. News and World Report's ranking of the best undergraduate colleges for entrepreneurship education.

 

Map Resource: Small Business Survival Rankings

The Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council recently released its ranking for the best states to start a new business. Louisiana ranks 29th--not as bad as it might be, not nearly what we would have it be. A troubling aspect of Louisiana's score is our ranking behind other states in the region.

A VC's List of Books for Entrepreneurs

Venture capitalist Fred Wilson wrote a blog entry this week that listed some books that he thought every entrepreneur should read. True to the spirit of the web and social networking, Zachary Burt (zburt on twitter), creator of the Hip Hop Goblin, created a wiki with Wilson's list of books.
