LSU now # 1 in college football poll

The Associated Press media poll moved the LSU Tigers (4-0) up one spot from No. 2 and bumped No. 1 Oklahoma (3-0) to No. 2 after LSU defeated No. 16 West Virginia 47-21 in Morgantown, W.Va. LSU was last No. 1 during the regular season on Nov. 11, 2007. Full article

 

LSU researcher: Gulf seafood is safe to consume

A nationally recognized expert in food safety recently indicated that Louisiana's Gulf of Mexico seafood is safe. The problem? There is still a perception that it is tainted by the BP oil. Lucina Lampila, associate professor of seafood technology at LSU, said that no tainted seafood has ever gone to market and won't, but a survey showed "69 percent of consumers are still concerned about seafood" harvested in the Gulf.  Full article.  

 

LSU to rebrand, merge related centers

Centers with related missions located on the LSU campus will soon merge under a single name. LSU indicated that change will enhance collaboration between SDMI and other departments and units.    Full article.  

 

LSU to sell own brand of beer

LSU plans to sell its own brand of beer, with release planned during the fall football season. Local Baton Rouge-based Tin Roof Brewing Co. will partner with LSU to produce the beer. Mockler Beverage will distribute the beer. Currently there is no word on a name for the beer.     Full article. 

 

LSU scientist: Time will tell on oil spill damage

Ed Overton, LSU's School of the Coast & Environment recently indicated that one year after the BP oil spill, the environmental damage appears to be far less severe than originally thought. Overton: "We need to go through a growing season—the full life cycle of the ecosystem—before we know absolutely for sure.”  Full article.  

 

LA higher education ends boom-&-bust decade

David Cronrath came to LSU in 2000 with hopes of helping to build one of the finest arts and design schools in the Southeast. Cronrath is one of hundreds of college faculty members who have left LA, either by choice or through layoffs. His experience illustrates the boom-and-bust cycle that characterized higher education in LA during the past decade. Full article.  

 

LSU Tigers off to quick start on National Signing Day

LSU's highly ranked football recruiting class got off to a fast start. Early signees included quarterback Zach Mettenberger, defensive tackle Anthony Johnson and running back Kenny Hilliard. The latest to sign was quarterback Stephen Rivers of Athens, Ala. Rivers is the younger brother of San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers. LSU could sign at least 23 players and as many as 26.  Full article.  

 

Les Miles to remain LSU's football coach

LSU football coach Les Miles said he thought about becoming Michigan's new football coach, but in the end, he did not want to leave what he has built at LSU. Miles recently interviewed for the coaching job at Michigan and LSU officials said Miles did receive an offer, which included a significant boost in pay from the $3.8 million he makes at LSU.   Full article.  

 

LSU vs. Texas A&M in Cotton Bowl Jan 7

LSU’s Jordan Jefferson will start his third consecutive bowl game tonight in the Cotton Bowl in Cowboys Stadium. No LSU quarterback has started that many since Tommy Hodson had three through the 1986-88 seasons. Full article

 

LSU ranked in Top 100 higher ed values

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance recently released its annual ranking of four-year institutions that deliver a stellar education at an affordable price, and LSU once again made the top 100 best values in public higher education. LSU ranks 76th.  Full list.
