Map Resource: Small Business Survival Rankings
The Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council recently released its ranking for the best states to start a new business. Louisiana ranks 29th--not as bad as it might be, not nearly what we would have it be. A troubling aspect of Louisiana's score is our ranking behind other states in the region.

Advocate Calls for More Funding for Higher Ed
The Baton Rouge Advocate's editorial of Sunday, September 27, lauds Governor Bobby Jindal for giving the state's two streamlining commissions financial targets for their recommended cost-cutting. However, the same editorial calls the Governor's strategy into question for wanting higher education to emerge with a smaller budget.

Tax Incentives and Job Creation
Business Week reports, "States are doling out billions to woo companies and revive local economies. But their incentives may be undermining America's recovery plan." The article claims that states have given a record $50 billion in tax breaks in the past year. Arthur J. Rolnick, vice president and research director for the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, says the the increase in tax breaks "undermines the economic union, and it misallocates resources.
U.S. Unemployment Hits 9.5%
CNNMoney reports that U.S. economy shed more jobs than exprected in June, with unemployment rising for the ninth straight month. About 467,000 jobs were lost during June, compared to 322,000 for May and the official June forecast of 365,000. The total unemployment perecentage represents a 26-year high. Full story here.
